Observational Research

Study design forms a core component of research, mainly determined by the study objectives. Observational studies point towards possible causal associations, are less resource intensive than trials, and have a better external validity.

Among the different primary data collection observational study designs, we perform case-control, cross-sectional, cohort and hybrid studies.

OXON advises clients frankly on the advantages and disadvantages of their study options and support them in steering committees of observational studies by providing expertise in clinical epidemiology and safety, PROs and health economics and product safety regulation and compliance.

We provide clients with the following services:
– Strategy
– Design and Protocol
– Implementation
– Data Management
– Statistical Analysis
– Report, Publication and Dissemination

Observational Study Designs

OXON provides diverse single and multi-country observational studies.

CASE CONTROL STUDIES

Case-control is a type of epidemiological observational study to identify groups based on outcomes and then examining historical data for each group. Case-control studies typically include only individuals with a specific characteristic, with a sample, often a tiny minority, of the rest of the population.

CROSS-SECTIONAL STUDIES

Cross-sectional studies are descriptive studies that capture and analyse data from a population, or a representative subset, at a specific point in time. Unlike case-control studies, they may be used to describe some feature of the population, such as prevalence of an illness, or they may support inferences of cause and effect.

COHORT STUDIES

OXON performs prospective and retrospective cohort studies, including prospective patient registries.
In a prospective cohort study, a group with a characteristic in common is selected at the start of the study and then data collected over time as cross-sections. A retrospective cohort study tries to study the association of exposure to disease outcome within the cohort in a retrospective manner.
